Microfinance Focus, Sept. 9, 2009: The World Bank report on "doing Business" has pointed out India's failure to enforce legal and investor disputes redressal and placed the country at 133 in ranking, much below Pakistan, Nepal and most African countries.
In starting a business India ranked 169, in dealing with construction permits 175, in employing workers 104, in registering property 93, in getting credit 30, in protecting investors 41, in paying taxes 169, in trading across borders 94, in enforcing contracts 192 and in closing a business 138.
Otherwise, a record 131 economies around the globe reformed business regulation in 2008/09, said the IFC-World Bank Doing Business 2010 report. That is more than 70 percent of the 183 economies covered by the report - the largest share in any year since the annual report was first published in 2004. And this progress came against the backdrop of a global economic crisis.
