Microfinance Focus, Jan. 27, 2010: Princess Máxima of the Netherlands, special advisor to the United Nations Secretary-General on financial access, has reiterated her plea to allow people in poor countries easier access to financial services, which she said would play a vital role in changing their economic lives.
She said microcredit should become a well-developed component within the mainstream finance to become fruitful and yield positive returns.
Speaking at a microfinance meeting in the Peace Palace at The Hague, organised by Radio Netherlands Worldwide, she said: “What I would like to make clear here is that we are inclined to focus on loans, while other financial products like savings are possibly more important for poor people.”
Princess Máxima has also pointed out that the relatively high costs of operations in microfinance sector owe mainly to tiny loans involved and hoped the sector would overcome these initial bottlenecks soon.

mobile technology has proven itself as one of nthe fastest and easiest tools to use to widen access. What needs to be done is to coordinate the various technologies available, seek funding to expand their scope and make them available at low cost to MFIs.
