IFAD approves $218 million for rural poverty works worldwide

10% in Asia-Pacific still suffering from acute poverty: ADB
Microfinance Focus, Sept 11, 2009: Extreme poverty affects at least 10 per cent of the population in many parts of the Asia and Pacific region, Asian Development Bank said in a report. Titled “The Key Indicators for Asia and the Pacific 2009”, the report lists 19 economies where more than 10 per cent of the population were living on less than $1.25 a day in the latest year for which data are available. Six of the 19 economies are from the former Soviet Union. Four of the five most populous countries are also included and the data is not available for Indonesia. Full story

SBP provides Rs 215 million to boost Pakistan microfinance sector

MicrofinanceFocus, July 22, 2009: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has agreed to provide Rs 215 million under the Institutional Strengthening Fund (ISF) and signed on Tuesday Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Pakistan Microfinance Network (PMN) and NRSP Microfinance Bank, stated a press release. The country's central bank will provide Rs 133 million to PMN over the next five years and Rs 82 million to NRSP Microfinance Bank over one year for promotion of microfinance services in the country. In addition, Rs 82 million have also been approved for Tameer Microfinance Bank over the next one year. Full story

Conference on Islamic Microfinance from July 21

MicrofinanceFocus, July 18, 2009: A two day International Conference on the “Emerging concept of Islamic Microfinance” will be held in Islamabad from July 21 to 22.
