Participants from 61 countries register for Microcredit Summit in Nairobi

Microfinance Focus, March 4, 2010: Participants from 61 countries have registered so far for the Africa-Middle East Regional Microcredit Summit to be held April 7-10, 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya, and more than 60 speakers have confirmed their participation, with more names being added to the detailed agenda daily, said a press release.

The workshop titled: “Encouraging Savings: How Do We Make it Happen?” will include Co-Chairs: Chris De Noose, Managing Director of the World Savings Bank Institute and Lauren Hendricks, Executive Director of CARE’s ACCESS Africa Initiative along with the following panelists: Nyambura Koigi, Managing Director of the Kenya Post Office Savings Bank; Judith Aguga Acon, Sector Coordinator of CARE Uganda; Soumaila Sogoba, Technical Unit Director of Oxfam America’s Saving For Change Mali; Chief Bisi Ogunleye, Chair of COWAN, Nigeria; and Prof. H I Latifee, Managing Director of Grameen Trust, Bangladesh.

Another workshop titled “Obtaining Funds from New Financial Instruments and Mechanisms for Commercial and Emerging MFIs: From Funds to the Web” is chaired by Robert Annibale, Director of Microfinance at Citi, and includes the following panelists: Anne-Marie Chidzero, Chair of AfriCap; Lydia Koros, Chair of AMFI and Kiva Partner; Jean-Pierre Klumpp, CEO of BlueOrchard Finance, SA; and Ayehsa Wagle, Senior Vice President for MFI Investment at MicroCredit Enterprises.

Dignitaries confirmed include HM Queen Sofia of Spain, HRH Princess Máxima of The Netherlands, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus, BRAC Chair Sir Fazle Abed, Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo, and Kenya’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta.

Craft Silicon and Citi Foundation lead a group of more than 20 sponsors of the Summit.
