Kenyan MFIs to host field visits for Microcredit Summit participants

Microfinance Focus, Jan. 3, 2010: The Africa-Middle East Regional Microcredit Summit will arrange field visits to leading microfinance institutions in Kenya, said a statement. The organizations hosting the visit include Jamii Bora, Equity Bank, Faulu, KADET, ECLOF, K-Rep and KWFT.

The Africa-Middle East Regional Microcredit Summit to be held April 7-10, 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya is co-hosted by the Microcredit Summit Campaign and the Association of Microfinance Institutions of Kenya (AMFI). The summit will feature field visits a day before the summit (April 6), on the fourth day (April 10) and the day after (April 11) the summit, the statement mentioned.

The Kenya Summit`s plenaries include, “Using Microfinance as a Tool for Building Peace “and “Using Microfinance to Improve the Environment and Agriculture: Ensuring Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa and the Middle East.”
Some of the workshop topics include: “Sustainable Environment: Using Microfinance and People’s Own Initiatives to Propel Investment in Renewable Energy, Water and Sanitation”; “Microfinance and Urban Development: Slum Improvements and New Settlements;” and “Creating Sustainable Livelihoods for Youth to Prevent Destructive Behaviors.”

The Campaign is expecting 2,000 delegates from more than 40 countries to gather in Nairobi. Confirmed speakers include Nobel Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus and Kenyan Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, the Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta.
