Robert Annibale, the Global Head of Microfinance at Citi, also referred to new challenges facing microfinance in developing countries, such as poor infrastructure. In various parts of the world, institutions that have been active in the investment market have all brought a lot of innovation to the capital market. Microfinance first began with microcredit, but the need for more substantial products and services led to the evolution of microfinance. Where institutions have tried to grow, capital is always a problem. In India, the institutions that needed to grow became NBFIs. This conference will first address how we should address this problem and bring in more capital into microfinance institutions.
In microfinance we have longer-term contractual funding, but we have shorter-term assets. One lesson we can learn from other financial institutions is how we can achieve growth as we look at our balance sheets.
