Microfinance Focus, September 26, 2011: Grameen America has today opened its first branch office in the Bronx, New York. Nobel Laureate and Grameen Founder Muhammad Yunus was joined by Executives from Citi and Grameen America to announce branch opening and ‘Borrowers Marketplace’ showcasing the work of local microentrepreneurs.
The event took place at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. 40-60 local Grameen borrowers will showcase their wares as part of a photo-friendly Borrowers Marketplace at the Museum.
The new branch office is the latest effort in Grameen America’s mission to increase economic self-sufficiency for more low-income New Yorkers, especially women, through microlending, credit establishment and financial coaching programs.
Citibank, which has provided savings accounts for more than 3,000 Grameen clients to date in Manhattan and Queens, will again partner with Grameen America to provide savings accounts to new clients in the Bronx.
